Studio Carta was founded by Angela Liguori in 2004 in order to import a line of vibrantly-colored, 100% cotton Italian ribbon. Today it is the exclusive importer and the only U.S. source for these high-quality ribbons, which have been produced using the same materials and methods since the nineteenth century.

The identity uses Cholla Slab and Cholla Unicase, two sub-families from the Cholla typeface family. Designed in 1998–99 by Sibylle Hagmann, it is named after a species of cactus indigenous to the Mojave Desert.
