BLAG (Better Letters Magazine) is “the world’s only print and online publication dedicated to sign painting. BLAG exists to inspire and inform the international sign painting community by celebrating exciting work and sharing knowledge and resources”. The publication was initiated by Sam Roberts.

The magazine is designed by Utile studio, who also created the masthead. It is inspired by the Gothic Paneled face, found in the 1874 publication Specimens of chromatic wood type, borders, etc. manufactured by Wm. H. Page & Co. The type was redrawn by hand, modified considerably, and then digitized for use as the masthead for the magazine.

Utile is an elegant and subtly flared sans serif, suited for continuous smaller sized text and impactful display typography with superb legibility and optical balance in print and screen. The accompanying sans is Aktiv Grotesk.
