Regular readers of Fonts In Use might have encountered the name Jerry Matejka as the designer of Soul, a geometric sans he published with VGC in 1972. Around the same time, Matejka also worked as illustrator. Here’s an example for this aspect of his work: the cover of the Cue magazine issue from July 15, 1972. The credit inside the magazine reads:
Jerry Matejka depicts the calm, bucolic joys of outdoor dining
The title “Outdoor Dining” is shown in tightly spaced caps of Eckmann, a German typeface first issued at the turn of the century which saw a new lease of life from around the late 1960s.
