Politiken, the “World’s Best-Designed Newspaper” in 2011 and 2012 employs Gerard Unger’s Capitolium 2 News in Regular, Semibold and Bold weights as a fundamental element in its design.

In December 2011, Art Director Søren Nyeland launched a redesign of Politiken, Denmark’s second-largest morning newspaper — as well as the international version, Politiken Weekly. In the new design Unger’s font is used widespread in the newspaper, both for display as for text size. According to the website Smashing Magazine, the “sharpness of typography is breathtaking”.

  1. The additional typefaces used by Politiken include the caps-only Politiken Egyptienne (©1993 PS‑Skriftatelier, similar to Clarendon) and a condensed grotesque. Latter is probably custom, too. On the website, it is replaced by Roboto.

  2. The condensed grotesque is Flama—one of their condensed varieties.

  3. Thanks, Paul. Added.
