Makoto San – Moso album art
Between ritual electro, analog tinkering, and invented folklore, the debut album from the collective Makoto San relies on a strong visual universe, designed as a direct extension of their music. The art direction by IGO Studio deploys singular imagery around masked figures and bamboo objects. This visual language is structured by Benjamin Puddu’s graphic design, which plays on an impactful typographic contrast between two typefaces: Helvetica from Max Miedinger and Apoc from Blaze Type. On one hand, Helvetica provides a rational framework and a highly legible geometric rigor. On the other, Apoc asserts itself across the cover and inside the gatefold with its unstable serifs, evoking an ancient script disrupted by the digital realm to create a hybrid graphic voice.
The interaction between the rationality of Helvetica and the organic nature of Apoc goes beyond mere decoration; it becomes a full-fledged narrative tool. From the vinyl center label to the back cover, this typographic duo creates a coherent visual ecosystem. Mirroring Makoto San’s music, at the crossroads of imagined Asian traditions and European club culture, neo-grotesque rigor and textual experimentation merge to bring a dense, unique universe to life.
