Neonoir comes full circle (almost). The monolinear script was designed by Roland Hörmann of phospho as a homage to the art of mid-20th century neon signs. Its shapes with long connecting strokes and even longer i “dots” are based on the blue neon sign of the Währinger Gürtel Kino, the last sex cinema in Vienna’s former red-light district.
Almost eighty years after the cinema sign was installed and five years after it was dismounted, I’ve spotted Neonoir in use for an illuminated sign, in blue, and in Vienna, no less! It’s not actual neon, though. Also, it doesn’t advertise adult movies, but rather the services of real estate platform dibeo.at.

This a cool moment, but as a neon devotee, I suggest we have a tag for “simulated neon” or “LED neon”, because this stuff is very different from hand-bent glass tubes filled with gas.
