  1. Merci, Antoine! Very cool to see Hypnos in contemporary use.

You kindly pointed me to an Instagram post from June 2025. In it, Julia Schimautz, the designer, shows some of the design and production process. She als comments on the type:

What really pulls the artwork together for me is the typeface ‘Hypnos’ by Jean Alessandrini, originally created in the ’70s. It’s currently being digitized, but we had the honor of using it before its official release. Thank you so much, Jean & Oliver!

I’m aware of one – unreleased – academic digitization of Hypnos, made in 2020 by Lucas Liccini as part of his Revivals & Renditions student project at UdK Berlin. Now I’m curious to learn who “Jean & Oliver” are – maybe it’s Jean Alessandrini himself? That would be épatant.

  2. Or maybe it’s Olivier?

I found a 2023 post about Alessandrini and his typefaces on the website of Espace Européen Gutenberg:

Désireux de les actualiser, de les valoriser et de les diffuser, il collabore avec Olivier Nineuil, dessinateur de caractères, en vue de leur numérisation.

    Translation:

Eager to update, enhance, and disseminate them, he collaborated with Olivier Nineuil, a type designer, with a view to digitizing them.

It is in fact Jean Alessandrini and Olivier Nineuil (from Typofacto) that I was in contact with! Olivier is currently working with Jean on digitizing his typefaces, so I hope they will be available online soon!

I discovered Hypnos through Fonts in Use. I often use this site for inspiration and to find typefaces for my projects, so it feels very special to now be included here.

  4. Thank you very much for chiming in and for confirming my assumption, Julia! In the meantime, I’ve been in touch with Olivier Nineuil myself, but forgot to post an update here. I’m already looking forward to the release of Jean Alessandrini’s digitized typefaces.
