Tanglewood – Rise and Shine album art

Rise and Shine is the only album by Jamaican roots reggae band Tanglewood. Produced by B.B. Seaton at Dynamic Sounds and Music Mountain studios, it was released in 1985 on Creole Records. Carole Orme is credited for the sleeve, Handel Newell and Michael Denton for graphic design.

The album title is shown in freeform lettering. The band name, however, is typographic, that is, it’s written with prefabricated letterforms. The tangly, woody capitals go back to an alphabet shown by Daniel T. Ames as Rustic Alphabet in 1882 Ames’ Hand Book of Artistic Penmanship (New York, 1882).

Ames was a major figure in American ornamental penmanship, engrossing and illustration, and a leading expert in forgery detection who testified at many prominent trials in the U.S., Canada and other countries. He was also a pioneer in American penmanship publishing, who founded and edited the Penman’s Art Journal in New York City.

I haven’t found out yet in which form this Rustic Alphabet was available in 1985. It might have been turned into rub-down type or a film typeface. In 2002, Paul James Lloyd made a digitization named Deep Woods Initials.
