Lost Soul Aside video game
When UltiZero Games unveiled the visual universe and art direction for Lost Soul Aside, using the Fautive typeface, designed by Fred Wiltshire for the Blaze Type foundry, stood out as a bold, distinctive choice. Originally revealed in 2016 as a solo project by Chinese creator Yang Bing before evolving into a Sony-published blockbuster set for release in 2025, this action-RPG takes a strong graphic stance. To shape the visual identity of this adventure, the art direction, which notably collaborated with Japanese fashion brand Roen for character costume design, steps away from hyper-futuristic or overly conventional fantasy tropes. The exaggerated proportions and striking visual presence of this contemporary serif immediately lend a dramatic tension to the game’s overall graphic treatment.
The typographic work across communication materials and display assets for Lost Soul Aside fully leverages Fautive’s expressive nature. In the main logo and the UI design led by Li Wenxin, the font’s core characteristics, namely its sharp serifs, incisive thin strokes, and high-contrast forms, are skillfully reworked and textured with ice crystal effects and luminous fractures. These choices resonate with the fast-paced action and polished aesthetic of the combat systems, inspired by iconic franchises like Final Fantasy and Devil May Cry. Whether featured in main titles, user interfaces, or promotional visuals, the typeface infuses a sharp personality that reinforces the game’s dark, refined aesthetic.
By integrating Fautive at the heart of its world, Lost Soul Aside shows how independent type design can refresh the visual codes of major game productions. Blaze Type thus sees one of its most daring typefaces brought to the forefront of an international release, proving that custom typography has a vital place in crafting modern interactive brands.
The secondary typefaces including those used for Chinese and Japanese text are yet unidentified.
