An advertising column – known in German as Litfaßsäule – spotted in Berlin’s Burgstraße in 1961. The large poster at the top uses Super-Grotesk’s schmalfett style and calls on people to vote for the candidates of the Nationale Front at the elections on September 17. The smaller ones below advertise the “Stunde der Musik” concert series at the Museum für Deutsche Geschichte as well as a performance of the Berliner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester at the Metropol-Theater, featuring Fanfare and Berthold Block.

Thank you, Ralf!
The dates of the advertised events – in September 1961 – suggest that this picture was taken shortly after the Berlin Wall was erected on 13 August. The infamous barrier would divide the city for 28 years, until it came down on 9 November 1989.
There is still a Litfaßsäule located at this spot just behind the Berlin Cathedral. Google Street View has a capture from March 2022.
Happy German Unity Day!
