I’ve been wondering where this variant of Simplex with the alternate A and D glyphs came from. Apart from this album cover, I’ve also seen this type on the film itself, the opening credits for the first two seasons of Knots Landing, and the movie Resurrection (1980). Aside from the differences mentioned before, the typography in those titles also feature a normal looking T glyph.
I haven’t yet found a phototype supplier that offered these alternates, but that’s possible. It’s also possible that the designer of this cover and the titles simply redrew the letters so they would be more conventional.
