The typeface used for the opening titles of Ingmar Bergman’s Persona is Florida, an early contrasted sans-serif drawn by Hans Möhring and first cast in c. 1931 by Woellmer, predating Cassandre’s Peignot by a couple of years.

  1. Bless this website and it being the first result when I googled “Persona 1966 typeface”, since I was so curious what the opening titles were as I could not recall.

  2. Where would it be possible to download or buy this FLORIDA font?

    Thank you for your help!

  3. Hi Anton, I’m afraid there is no digital version of Florida yet. Vinter is a typeface that has a somewhat similar feel. It can be licensed from Monokrom.

  4. Update: There are now two digital interpretations of Florida, but neither is available for licensing (yet). See the typeface bio for details.

  5. Update 2: One year later, there are two more digital interpretations of Florida: Rick Banks’ F37 Bergman is already available. ABYME’s Persona is not released yet.

  6. I’ve finally created a page dedicated to the title sequences of Ingmar Bergman’s films, in order to find out how often Florida is used.

Between 1957 and 1968 Bergman directed twelve feature films. Ten have a title sequence featuring Persona, the first being Det sjunde inseglet / The Seventh Seal (1957), the last Vargtimmen / Hour of the Wolf (1968).

The Persona (1966) title sequence is the only with black text on a white background, all others white on a black background.

  7. Hi Zeke, Anton, Florian, Christian. Update 3: we just released Persona at Abyme. It’s not strictly a revival of Florida but I thought I’d let you know.

  8. Thank you very much for letting us know, and congrats on the release! I’ve updated our page for Persona. Feel invited to contribute a post about its first application (i.e. an excerpt of what you shared in your revue section already), or any other in-use example of note.
