Jolly Roger was designed by phototype entrepreneur Phil Martin, who wrote that he drew it specifically to reference water:

“When it came out in 1970 it changed the look of boating magazines. Once a month I would go to a newsstand and look at them. Jolly Roger somewhere in every one.” — Design for (a) Living, 2004

These hydrogeologists got the message. Still, it’s a strangely whimsical look for waste disposal.
