Jo-Ann Mapson’s Shadow Ranch is a “sensitive family drama set in today’s New West”, according to Kirkus Reviews.
The cover was designed by Lisa Beth Cohen, a senior book-jacket designer at HarperCollins at the time. For the title and author, Cohen chose Rougfhouse, one of the many handwriting scrawlers from House Industries’ early days. Here, paired with a Maynard Dixon painting of wild horses, the type feels both raw and contemporary (rather than old-timey wild west). The loose letterspacing and triangle ornaments are common signatures of 1990s display typography.
